Bier

Amy Bier, MD

Medical school: Loyola University Chicago

Residency: University of Wisconsin

Specialty: Internal Medicine

Professional interests: Global health, education, and leadership/development

Reason for choosing our fellowship: “I chose UW HPM because of the dedication to training those of many specialties to become incredible HPM physicians. I was fortunate enough to see the program throughout my residency, and I knew upon deciding to apply this was the best place to train. There are many facets to this fellowship that make it an amazing place to learn: the bootcamp introduction to the specialty, workshops such as PalliTalk, the diverse and robust clinical experiences, the prioritization of learning, and the people. Everyone is so supportive and thoughtful, I couldn't imagine a better place to train.”

Coburn

Mikaela Coburn-Pierce, MD

Medical school: University of Minnesota

Residency: North Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program/University of Minnesota

Specialty: Family Medicine

Professional interests: Addiction medicine, neurodiversity and public health

Reason for choosing our fellowship: “I chose to pursue a fellowship in order to build on my communication skills and to expand clinical skills around symptom management. Palliative care aligns with my approach to medicine of holistic, individualized, patient-centered care. I chose this fellowship program for its curriculum around communication skills and the unique palliative models of care, like the in-patient unit.”

Hudson

Kristal Hudson, MD

Medical school: University of North Dakota

Residency: University of Arizona

Specialty: Internal Medicine

Professional interests: Hospitalist and inpatient palliative care

Reason for choosing our fellowship: “Hospice and Palliative Medicine at UW felt like the best fit for me. It is one of the strongest programs I came across that I am fortunate to be a part of. In addition, UW GME creates a welcoming culture with emphasis on diversity, equity and inclusion. And let's not forget the added bonus of living in Madison.”

Matthews

Michael Matthews, MD

Medical school: University of Alabama at Birmingham

Residency: University of Wisconsin

Specialty: Internal Medicine

Professional interests: Inpatient/Outpatient Palliative Medicine; Hospice; Physician Communication

Reason for choosing our fellowship: “As a resident who trained at UW, I had the benefit of seeing how robust the HPM program was. I also got to see how thoughtful and compassionate the faculty were, and how well they took care of patients. I knew that it would be a privilege to learn from them in fellowship.”
