Customized Training for the Career You Want

Robust didactics, clinical experiences at a world-class transplant center and strong research mentoring give you the skills you need for career success.

Didactics

Our program's multidisciplinary learning opportunities include:

  • A weekly case conference and Grand Rounds led by visiting speakers and expert faculty*
  • A weekly didactic liver curriculum conference led by GI and transplant hepatology fellows and mentored by hepatology, surgery, radiology and pathology faculty*
  • Weekly learning and working conferences on liver pathology, liver transplant selection and liver tumors
  • A new interactive summer didactic series on broad topics, such as physician wellness, burnout and difficult conversations
  • An in-house training exam to assess fellow board readiness

*These conferences offer continuing education credit.

Clinical Schedule

All fellows participate in multidisciplinary patient care rounds and clinic huddles with hepatology and transplant surgery faculty, coordinators, and pharmacists.

In addition to your transplant hepatology clinical experiences, you'll learn from expert faculty in other department through dedicated radiology, pathology and addiction medicine rotations.

Scholarly Activity

Research

All fellows present research at local and national conferences and many author at least one publication. We provide funds for travel to liver and transplant conferences, including the American Society of Transplantation fellows symposium, the American Transplant Conference, the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and Digestive Disease Week.

Our program's research-in-progress conferences streamline mentorship and provide you with feedback throughout your fellowship.

In addition to direct mentorship, you'll have access to a strong research infrastructure in our division and department. Dedicated research staff, coordinators and statisticians help you navigate research proposals and analysis.

Teaching

The Department of Medicine's Fellow Medical Education (FAME) Training Track trains fellows to become effective clinician-teachers and scholars.

Additional Opportunities in the Department

  • Fellows have opportunities to develop quality improvement projects using transplant hepatology core practice metrics to inform and improve practice.
  • The Department of Medicine’s QI Curriculum for Fellowship teaches fellows how to apply quality improvement knowledge and skills directly to clinical practice.
