Inquiry and Innovation

Research is a core component of the University of Wisconsin Endocrinology fellowship. With support from investigators in our division, department and campus, you’ll participate in innovative research and learn to develop your own projects.

Personalized Research Experience

We structure the research experience to support your individual career goals.

  • First year: Meet with faculty members, choose a research mentor and start a research plan
  • Second year: Focus and develop your research

Protected Time

In your first year, you'll have nonclinical time to prepare for conferences, work on a QI project, and create a research plan.

In your second year, the program is designed to protect at least 50 percent of your time for research.

Opportunities for Collaboration

Whether you are interested in basic, translational, clinical or health services research, there’s a collaborator for you here. Here are examples of some programs that might interest you:

Presentations, Publications, and Awards

Fellows present research findings at these conferences:

  • ENDO: the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society
  • American Diabetes Association annual meeting
  • American Thyroid Association annual meeting
  • American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists annual meeting

Each fellow typically completes at least one national conference presentation, and many author at least one publication, during their training.

Getting Funded

For projects requiring funding, your mentor will work with you individually to identify grant funding opportunities

Our department also offers a pilot award program for residents and fellows, and our Office of Research Services provides biostatistical services, grant writing education and other career development opportunities for learners.
