Inquiry and Innovation
Scholarship is a core component of the University of Wisconsin Endocrinology fellowship and these experiences are tailored to the interests and goals of the individual fellow via our pathways.
Pathways
All fellows choose a focus pathway in the fall of the first year. Available pathways include mentored experience in:
- Clinical or basic science research
- Safety and quality improvement
- Medical education scholarship
- Or fellows may elect to use their focus pathway time expanding their clinical exposure with the clinical excellence pathway
Other focus pathways may be considered with approval by program leadership.
Fellows have protected pathway time for one half day each week in the second semester of the first year, and one full day each week in year two. This approach allows individualization of the learning experience in fellowship in complement to the core educational program.
If you elect the research pathway, you will have the support from investigators in our division, department and campus to participate in innovative research and learn to develop your own projects.

Personalized Research Experience
We structure the research pathway experience to support your individual career goals.
- First year: Meet with faculty members, choose a research mentor and start a research plan.
- Second year: Focus and develop your research.

Opportunities for Collaboration
Whether you are interested in basic, translational, clinical or health services research, there’s a collaborator for you here. Here are examples of some programs that might interest you:
- Research in the Division of Endocrinology
- Alan Attie, PhD (Biochemistry)
- Brian Parks, PhD (Nutritional Sciences)
- Rebecca Sippel, MD (Surgery–Endocrine)
- Corrine Voils, PhD (Surgery–Health Services)
Presentations, Publications, and Awards
Fellows present research findings at these conferences:
- ENDO: the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society
- American Diabetes Association annual meeting
- American Thyroid Association annual meeting
- American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists annual meeting
Each fellow typically completes at least one national conference presentation aligned with their pathway work, and many author at least one publication, during their training.
Getting Funded
For projects requiring funding, your mentor will work with you individually to identify grant funding opportunities
Our department also offers a pilot award program for residents and fellows, and our Office of Research Services provides biostatistical services, grant writing education and other career development opportunities for learners.
