Faculty Development across the University of Wisconsin Department of Medicine has become a cornerstone of our strategic 2020 initiative. With the recent changes with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the New Accreditation System (NAS), we have the challenge of making sure our entire faculty are trained and ready to meet the new challenges of competency-based training. As a department the training of our faculty is one of highlight priorities as this affects all aspects of our program. We strongly believe that this investment with our faculty builds better trainees, better patient care and better ways of communicating and addressing the needs of our interprofessional teams.
We have two faculty development initiatives within the DOM that are ongoing strategic goals:
- Increase the amount of quality direct observation of all learners and improve the effectiveness of feedback delivered to learners across DOM. Please see our video about this intitative.
- Gain a better understanding of effective ways of communicating with patients about serious illness. Compassionate communication with our patients and clear, professional communication with colleagues improves patient care. The DOM is supporting WeTALK workshops and an individualized coaching program to reach all 600+ faculty, advanced practice providers, fellows, residents and nursing staff to meet this goal.
