Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology

UW Hospital has one of the nation's leading infection control programs.  Lead by Dr. Nasia Safdar, the Infection Control Department at UWHC has been recognized for its research on intravascular device infection, isolation for prevention of infection, and studies of the epidemiology of infection in the ICU. The UWHC Infection Control Department is committed to prevention an control of healthcare-associated infections through collaboration with departments across the spectrum of healthcare. The Department provides 24-hour-a-day consultation for assistance with infection control issues and outbreaks.  Other specific efforts include nosocomial infection surveillance, education regarding hand hygiene and best practices for invasive device use, control of environmental infection sources, communicable disease reporting and exposure follow-up, policy development, and outbreak investigation.
