Dr. Daniel Shirley is a faculty member in the Division of Infectious Disease within the Department of Medicine. He serves as Associate Hospital Epidemiologist, leading Infection Prevention efforts related to Special Pathogens, Ambulatory Infection Prevention, and Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI). He is also the Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Antimicrobial Stewardship at UnityPoint Health-Meriter. As faculty for the Department of Medicine Global Health Pathway, he received a UW-Madison Global Health Institute Travel Award and has traveled to Ethiopia several times with Internal Medicine Global Pathway residents to assist in clinical and research activities. Dr. Shirley is involved in medical education, serving as group instructor, preceptor, and research mentor.
Dr. Shirley’s clinical interests include global health initiatives, hospital acquired infections, and general infectious disease.
Dr. Shirley’s research centers on effective implementation of Infection Prevention practices in a global health setting and preparing for emerging infections. He also continues to work on quality improvement projects related to the prevention of hospital-acquired infections at UW Health.
