Professional Activities

Dr. Sanjay Asthana is a faculty member and chief of the Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology within the Department of Medicine. He holds the Duncan G. and Lottie H. Ballantine Chair in Geriatrics.

Dr. Asthana is the Director of the National Institute of Aging/National Institutes of Health Wisconsin-Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health; the Associate Dean for Gerontology at the UW SMPH; and the Director of the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital. In these capacities, Dr. Asthana oversees researchers working to translate research advances to improved patient care and potential cures or prevention guidelines.

Prior to joining UW-Madison, Dr. Asthana served as Director of the Alzheimer’s Disease & Memory Disorders Research Program for the Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System in Seattle/Tacoma, Washington. He is an Elected Fellow in the American College of Physicians, the Royal College of Physicians of London, England, and of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. Dr. Asthana received the “Outstanding Physician Award” from the Alzheimer’s Association and has been selected multiple times for the Top Doctors in America list and Top Doctors in Madison list.

Dr. Asthana is a Chartered Member of multiple NIH study sections, including the NIA-Neuroscience Study Section, the Pilot Clinical Trials in Alzheimer’s Disease Review Committee, and “Aging Systems and Geriatrics” Study Section of the Biology of Development and Aging Integrated Review Group. Dr. Asthana received NIH “Academic leadership Award” (K07) in Alzheimer’s disease, the first of its kind. He has also served as a reviewer on numerous NIH Special Emphasis Review Panels.

Dr. Asthana’s research program broadly focuses on clinical psychopharmacology and neuroendocrinology of gonadal steroids and cholinergic drugs in Alzheimer’s disease and healthy aging.
