Meet Dr. Abbie Salcedo, the new DOM associate director for faculty affairs and operations

Abigail Salcedo

Abbie Salcedo, PhD, MBA, is the new University of Wisconsin Department of Medicine (UW DOM) associate director of faculty affairs and operations, effective April 21, 2025.

In this key leadership role, Dr. Salcedo will oversee faculty affairs operations, human resources, development, quality improvement, and facilities management, in support of the department’s clinical, educational, research and outreach missions. She will collaborate with leadership to address challenges, implement solutions and help shape strategic priorities that foster innovation and excellence in academic medicine.

Dr. Salcedo holds a doctorate (PhD) in Adult, Professional and Community Education from Texas State University, as well as a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Houston – Clear Lake.

She joins the DOM from the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine, where she served as the director of faculty affairs for two years, building on more than a decade of progressive experience in academic administration.

In that role, Dr. Salcedo oversaw all aspects of promotion and tenure committee administration. She also designed, implemented and taught programs for faculty affairs to enhance growth at all career stages, and provided leadership in design, planning and implementation of policy, procedures, systems and services supporting faculty.

A unique aspect of Dr. Salcedo’s background is her extensive experience working with faculty at every stage of their professional life cycle. She has supported medical students and PhD candidates at the beginning of their academic journey, guided residents and fellows through their training, facilitated academic appointments and career advancement for early- and mid-career faculty, and assisted with transitions into retirement.

“This comprehensive exposure has given me a well-rounded perspective on the evolving needs of academic professionals,” she says. “I have thoroughly enjoyed leading initiatives that support faculty success. It often feels like solving a complex puzzle (something I enjoy in my spare time), and this role feels like a natural extension of that passion and skill set.”

This comprehensive exposure has given me a well-rounded perspective on the evolving needs of academic professionals.

Prior to UVA, Dr. Salcedo was the assistant director of operations and strategy for the Diagnostic Medicine department at the University of Texas Dell Medical School. There she was involved in strategic planning, business plan development, budget and financial management, oversight of the Radiology residency program, research project management and faculty recruitment.

Overall, Dr. Salcedo’s extensive experience in finance, human resources, faculty recruitment, promotions and faculty development will be a great asset to the department.

Her background in graduate medical education, research (she has received grants and has six publications as first author) and teaching (she has taught both graduate and undergraduate courses) will likewise provide her with the ability to support DOM faculty throughout their careers as teachers and mentors, investigators and patient care providers.

“I saw a unique opportunity to contribute at the intersection of faculty affairs and operational strategy [here],” she says. “I am excited to bring my experience and background into a space where thoughtful leadership and operational excellence are truly valued.”

Welcome to the UW and Madison, Dr. Salcedo!
