Educational Philosophy

Our Department is committed to providing residents and fellows with comprehensive education in a congenial and highly collegial environment so as to maximize learning and camaraderie. We emphasize graded responsibility to match learners' needs and delegate responsibilities with appropriate challenge. In addition to ensuring that the best cognitive and technical skills are achieved, we feel that it is our responsibility as faculty to mentor trainees in emotional and interpersonal areas such as compassion, beneficence, leadership, negotiation, the balance between career and personal life, patient autonomy as well as professional and personal integrity. 

Our core values of caring and compassion provide the foundation for our actions and stimulate us to help reduce the suffering of patients who seek assistance as well as bettering ourselves so we can be role models for individuals we train. In this spirit we will encourage you to maximize your potential through reflection and self-directed learning and allow your professional and personal lives to flourish.

  • Learner-directed emphasis tracks in hospital medicine, women's health, and all the subspecialty areas to help residents solidify career choices and accelerate their career development.
  • Our Primary Care Track is made up of twelve residents who receive specialized training for three years in both outpatient and inpatient medicine, allowing them to excel in general medicine practice right out of residency
  • Our senior residents have a very popular second weekly half day of clinic in the specialty or subspecialty of their choice
  • Comprehensive training with a very heterogeneous and diverse patient mix in three hospitals including a large primary care practice and a regional tertiary care center, University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, which ranks in the top five University Hospitals in the U.S. for quality of care. Additionally, the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital is ranked #1 for quality indicators for teaching VA hospitals, and Meriter Hospital has been named a top 100 private hospital in the US on several quality measures
