Pioneering New Programs for Geriatric Populations

Care for older persons demands innovative and patient-centered approaches that evolve as the health care system constantly changes. The field of geriatrics has created numerous innovative programs over the years that have helped improve patient outcomes (e.g. quality of life, ease of access, self-efficacy) and helped deliver higher value services.

Dr. Barczi and his team have launched many new programs within the Madison VA and UW Health over the past 20 years. He continues to collaborate closely with content experts (faculty with research interest in dementia, palliative care, home care and others) as well as health services researchers and implementation science researchers to effectively launch and sustain new programs that serve unique geriatric populations (rural elders, homebound older persons, Veterans).

Education For More Effective Elder-Care Teams

The growth of the older adult population has created a demographic imperative that demands a strategy in training all health care professionals in the basic competencies and skills to serve older adults. Dr. Steven Barczi has collaborated with numerous local and national programs and agencies (HRSA, VA, AGS, ACGME) over the past 25 years to launch and evaluate training initiatives that expand the workforce.

These efforts incorporate use of competency-based education and interprofessional training principles to create effective care teams to manage medically and socially complex older persons. Targeted learners include undergraduate medical trainees, resident, fellow and practicing health professionals.
