Dr. Barczi is a faculty member and chief of the Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology within the Department of Medicine. He is an attending physician at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans' Hospital (Madison VA) and the director of the Madison VA Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (VA GRECC). He also serves as director of the VA Geriatrics Patient-Aligned Care Team, co-PI of the HRSA-funded Wisconsin Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program, and co-PI of the VA Office of Rural Health-funded Successful Aging in Place for Tribal Veterans program.
Dr. Barczi is recognized nationally for his role as a geriatric educator who promotes competency-based education innovations across the graduate medical education continuum, including developing and disseminating interprofessional education products and approaches; mentoring and promoting early career geriatricians and other geriatric clinicians. He has been a part of the creation, evaluation and dissemination of multiple new care models, including the VA GRECC Connect Telemedicine network and sleep medicine home visits. He has also helped develop ACGME milestones in geriatrics and national geriatric competencies for internal medicine and family medicine residents.
He serves in leadership roles on multiple professional societies, including the former president of the Association of Specialty Professors, past chair of the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) Education Committee and is on the Board of Directors for the American Geriatrics Society and the Association of Directors of Geriatric Academic Programs. In these roles he has worked to advance national aging initiatives, promote workforce development and shape a national agenda for streamlined and competency-guided learner trajectories across the medical education continuum.
Dr. Barczi is board certified in internal medicine, geriatric medicine and sleep medicine.
Dr. Barczi's academic research interests include telemedicine, education innovation and sleep medicine.
