Online CME System FAQ

Note (added 1/9/2019): The FAQ below refers to a departmental online CME platform that is being replaced by a school-wide platform. Sessions in the University of Wisconsin Department of Medicine Online CME Application are from live lectures that occurred during the 2017-18 academic year. Each lecture is available for online CME credit up to one year from the date of the original, live lecture presentation. All content on this departmental platform will expire on or before June, 2019. Sessions from Department of Medicine 2018-19 academic year and beyond are available for enduring (online) CME on the Interprofessional Continuing Education Partnership (ICEP) website. For technical help with the ICEP platform, contact

What is this system for?

The University of Wisconsin Department of Medicine CME Application is an online system that allows learners to access Grand Rounds lectures available for online Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit, view your attendance history at live lectures, see a summary of credits you’ve earned, see identification cards associated with your account (used for scanning into live lectures), and submit evaluations of presentations.

What is the Department of Medicine Grand Round Series?

The Department of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison offers Medical Grand Rounds each week during the academic year on topics relating to internal medicine and related specialties. This series features a broad array of nationally prominent speakers who are leading experts in their fields from the University of Wisconsin and across the country. Lecturesintegrate basic science and clinical research into clinical practice for physicians, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, students, and the remainder of a multidisciplinary team.

The UW Department of Medicine has recognized that as academic physicians in internal medicine and related fields become increasingly specialized, it is important to provide a forum to maintain knowledge of medical therapies and technologies outside each specialty and to foster communication across all specialties.

All are welcome and encouraged to attend live Grand Rounds in person. For department members and trainees, attending the live lectures is expected because the talks provide an important opportunity to interact with colleagues and speakers and ask questions during the Q&A session at the end of the lecture. However, when clinical duties or travel prevent live attendance, the Department of Medicine Online CME Application allows you to watch videos of Grand Round lectures and earn Continuing Medical Education credit by completing a quiz.

Can I attend the live lectures, and is CME available for attending them?

Yes, live Grand Rounds lectures are open to all who wish to attend. CME credit is available for physicians; sign in prior to the talk using a laptop kiosk (department staff are available to assist you). Lectures occur on Friday mornings from 8:00-9:00 AM during the academic year, with exceptions for university holidays and breaks. Grand Rounds occurs in the auditorium (room A1028) of the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital located at 2500 Overlook Terrace, Madison, WI 53705.

For a schedule of upcoming talks, visit the Grand Rounds website.

Parking is available at the VA Hospital located by the main entrance of the hospital (2500 Overlook Terrace). Enter the ramp by the guard shack; park on levels 2 or 3 in the patient parking area. You will need a parking validation to exit the ramp after Grand Rounds and will not be able to exit the ramp without this ticket.  Please see department staff members before or after Grand Rounds for the validation ticket. Parking is available for your participation at Grand Rounds only.

Do I have to be affiliated with the UW-Madison Department of Medicine to earn Continuing Medical Education credit online?

No. For CME credits earned online, this system is available to anyone, including department members, others at UW-Madison who are not members of the Department of Medicine, and alumni and colleagues worldwide.

I’m not an MD or DO. Can I still earn continuing education credit?

Yes. Indicate your highest academic degree in your profile. If it is not an MD or DO degree, your credit letters will indicate that you have earned University of Wisconsin Continuing Education Hour(s). Note that a maximum of 1.0 hour is available per Grand Rounds session, and 10 hours equal 1 CEU.

Are American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) credits available?

Not at the present time (we are investigating this possibility for the future). Presently, a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit ™ is available for each Grand Rounds session.

Could I view the Accreditation Statement and Credit Designation Statement for this series?

The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health designates this live activity for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM.  Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
