PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES

Dr. William Busse is a faculty member of the Division of Allergy, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine within the Department of Medicine. Dr. Busse has been on the faculty at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health since 1974, and has served as head of the Allergy and Clinical Immunology Division and the George R. and Elaine Love Professor and Chair of Medicine. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and American Board of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

Dr. Busse has been a director on the American Board of Allergy and Immunology and served on the Advisory Council of the National Institutes of Health/National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NIH/NHLBI). He was a member of the Expert Panel on the Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma; was a member of the Board of External Experts for the NIH/NHLBI; and served as a board member and president of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAAAI). He has been an associate editor of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

Dr. Busse’s work has been recognized with many awards throughout his career. He has received the Folkert Belzer Life Achievement Award, the American Thoracic Society Award for Scientific Accomplishments, and the Citation Award for Achievement from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He has won the AAAAI Robert A. Cooke Lectureship Award, the American Thoracic Society Foundation Breathing for Life Award and the UW Health Patient Experience Award.

RESEARCH

Dr. Busse's research interests have focused on the mechanism of asthma, with particular interests in eosinophilic inflammation and rhinovirus-induced asthma exacerbations, for which he has had longstanding NIH support. He was also the principal investigator on the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIH/NIAID) Inner City Asthma Consortium, which studies immune-based therapy for asthma in inner-city children. Dr. Busse has a current grant through the NIH-HLBI on Asthmatic Inflammation and Neurocircuity Activation.
