Undergraduate researchers and faculty mentors recognized at 2017-18 Chancellor's Undergraduate Awards Ceremony

Undergraduate mentees of five Department of Medicine faculty members were recognized as Hilldale Undergraduate Faculty Research Fellows at the 2017-18 Chancellor's Undergraduate Awards Ceremony on May 1, 2018. 

The fellowship awards provide $3,000 to the student researcher and $1,000 to the faculty research advisor to help offset research expenditures.

Student-mentor teams and project titles in the Department of Medicine were:

  • Christopher Babiarz (major: Biology) and Dr. Dustin Deming (Hematology, Medical Oncology and Palliative Care) - "Enhancing Treatment Options for Patients with Neuroendocrine Tumors"
  • Lauren Fahmy (Major: Genetics and Nutritional Sciences) and Dr. Miriam Shelef (Rheumatology) - "The Effect of Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha Inhibition on Murine Antibody Response to Pertussis Vaccination"
  • Adam Kelly (Major: History) and Dr. Jacques Galipeau (Hematology, Medical Oncology and Palliative Care) - "Effect of Regulatory B cells on T Cell Plasticity in Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis"
  • Steve Sacotte (Major: Biochemistry) and Dr. Dawn Belt Davis (Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism) - "Role of Cholecystokinin under Hypoxic Conditions within Pancreatic Tissue"
  • TongZhen Xie (Majors: Biochemistry and Pharmacology & Toxicology) and Dr. Caitlin Pepperell (Infectious Disease) - "Investigating the Genetic Basis of M. Tuberculosis Biofilms Using a Genome-Wide Association Study"
