New faculty Q&A: Dr. Kiruba Vembu

Dr. Kiruba Vembu

Kiruba Vembu, MD

Assistant Professor
Hematology, Medical Oncology and Palliative Care

What is your primary professional focus as it relates to our mission areas (clinical, research and/or medical education)?
In my clinical focus, I provide consultation to patients admitted to UW Hospitals. I work alongside an interdisciplinary team to provide comprehensive palliative care. My research interests center on the expansion of palliative care, and I hope to share my passion in both of these areas with learners at all levels.

What drew you to UW–Madison and the Department of Medicine?
I grew up in a small town in southern Wisconsin and completed my undergraduate degree at UW–Madison; I hold the Wisconsin Idea close to heart for these reasons. Our collective responsibility to make sure our work touches the state of Wisconsin and the larger world, resonates with me. I was drawn to UW and the Department of Medicine because of the opportunities to accomplish these goals.

What are you most excited about during your first year with the department in this role?
In this first year, I am most excited to work with a fantastic group of colleagues, especially in teaching learners from medical students to fellows.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
When I am not working, I am spending time with my family and friends, talking over a cup of tea or trying new restaurants. I also love to read, ideally in a cozy coffee shop.

Favorite piece of advice from a mentor or inspiring figure in your life?
"Stay brave." Just two words that mean challenge yourself, because you are stronger than you believe; sometimes just a bit of courage can open a world of possibility.
