Heart attack patients ask: How long should I wait before resuming sex?

James Stein, MDAn article about sexual health following survival of a heart attack quoted James Stein, MD, professor, Cardiovascular Medicine and Robert Turell Professor of Cardiovascular Research.

When to resume having sex after being hospitalized for a heart attack or other issues is a common question, but many patients hesitate to bring up the topic.

“I assume it’s on their mind – even if they don’t ask,” says Dr. Stein. “So I just bring it up to make it more comfortable for them.”

Noting that American Heart Association guidelines advise that it's ok to resume sex one week after an uncomplicated heart attack, he explained that patients with complications or ongoing issues such as angina may require more specific advice from their health care provider.
