For Cathy Wingert, a diagnosis of terminal colon cancer led her to take on an advocacy role that continues to live on through the efforts of her family members.

Wingert was a patient of Dustin Deming, MD, assistant professor, Hematology, Medical Oncology and Palliative Care. Dr. Deming's dedication to patient care and research inspired her to create a fundraising event and support his research program through personal donations.

“My mom had this newfound hope that led her to attend conferences, serve on advisory boards and mentor other cancer patients,” said Brianah Laughnan, Wingert's daughter.

“She truly believed in all the work that Dusty was doing, and continues to do, in his research lab.”
