Faculty, learners shine at 2019 ACP Wisconsin Chapter Scientific Meeting

In keeping with an annual tradition of excellence, University of Wisconsin Department of Medicine faculty and residents—and two UW School of Medicine and Public Health students—received awards and presented lectures and posters at the American College of Physicians (ACP) Wisconsin Chapter 2019 Scientific Meeting, held in Wisconsin Dells on September 6-7, 2019.

Dr. Ann Schmidt named Distinguished Internist of the Year

Ann Schmidt, MD, FACP, clinical professor and interim division chief, General Internal Medicine, was named the chapter’s 2019 Distinguished Internist of the Year. The award honors exceptional effort and contribution to the science and art of internal medicine in keeping with the ideals and mission of the American College of Physicians, and recognizes Wisconsin chapter Fellows for their remarkable achievements in clinical practice, leadership and teaching.

Dr. Schmidt has a long history of service to the Department of Medicine and UW Health. She has received the Department of Medicine’s Grossman Professionalism award and its Mentoring Excellence award. She was also an original member and subsequent chair of UW Health’s professional conduct committee, and is a two-time recipient of the UW Health Patient Physician Champion award.

Learner awards, presentations and posters

Second-year internal medicine resident Corey Sadd, MD, won first place in the research-based vignette competition for “Long-Term Outcomes and Survival in Portopulmonary Hypertension Patients after Liver Transplant.” Dr. Sadd will present his vignette at the ACP national meeting, held April 23-25, 2020, in Los Angeles.

In the case-based vignette competition, second-year resident Stephanie Fricke, MD, presented “Acute Myeloid Leukemia Presenting with Central Diabetes Insipidus,” and UW SMPH student Steven Hesse presented “What's Wrong with Your Eye? A Rare Care of GPA!”

Fifteen residents and one UW SMPH student presented posters at the conference:

  • Deval Patel, MD, presented “Bad News with a Diagnosis of SCAD (Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection)”
  • Meredith Peters, MD, presented “Valley Fever on my Mind: A Case of Coccidioidal Meningitis.”
  • Johanna Poterala, MD, presented “Acquired Pure Red Cell Aplasia causing Severe Anemia in Jehovah's Witness”
  • Dylan Stanfield, MD, presented “Favorable Outcomes Among IBD Patients Undergoing Bariatric Surgery”
  • Matthew Weiss, MD, presented “Malignant Mimicry: A Steroid a Day Keeps the Doctor Away”

Drs. Deiss-Yehiely, Laurenzo, and Peters also participated as a team—finishing in second place—in the Medical Jeopardy Competition.

Faculty lectures

In addition, four department faculty members presented lectures at the conference:
