Dr. Nasia Safdar honored for Medical Student Research Mentorship

Nasia Safdar, MD, PhD, associate professor, Infectious Disease and vice-chair for research, Department of Medicine, has been selected for the 2018 Dean's Award for Excellence in Medical Student Research Mentorship. 

The award was presented during the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) Medical Education Day on May 18, 2018.

Established in 2011, the Dean's Research Mentorship Award honors individual University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health faculty members who have performed exceptional service outside of the classroom as research mentors for medical students. 

Awardees are recognized for extraordinary and sustained dedication in support of student research mentorship, and demonstration of a high level of research mentoring effectiveness as evidenced by student research scholarship and evaluations. 

Dr. Safdar's work is dedicated to advancing infection control measures to prevent and combat health care system-acquired infections. Her highly structured, goal‐driven approach to mentoring includes special emphasis on evidence‐based research. She is the principal investigator on 10 grants, including awards from the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Dr. Safdar has mentored physician-researchers at all levels, from students to faculty. She has facilitated a campus‐led mentoring workshop and helped plan the UW-Madison mid-career faculty mentoring program. In addition, she helped develop department‐wide training programs for investigators who host medical students for summer research. Nationally, she has been honored with the 2017 President’s Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers and the 2017 Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America Midcareer Investigator Award, among other awards. She earned her medical degree at Aga Khan University Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan.
