Dr. David Andes - antimicrobial drug discovery

David Andes, MD, professor and head, Infectious Disease, has been elected as a member of the Association of American Physicians (AAP). AAP is one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious professional organizations of physicians. It is devoted to the advancement of scientific and practical medicine.

He leads a research team that is using strategies informed by evolutionary biology to identify new sources of antibiotics. In 2014, Dr. Andes and UW–Madison Professor of Bacteriology Cameron Currie, PhD were awarded a $16 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to discover new antibiotics from natural sources. In the first two years of the study, the group found more than 400 compounds that have promising anti-microbial properties and favorable toxicity and efficacy profiles in early-stage in vitro and mouse studies. His clinical interests include general and transplant infectious disease medicine, clinical mycology, and antimicrobial pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. He has been named multiple times to the Best Doctors in America List.

AAP was founded in 1885 by seven physicians including Canadian physician Dr. William Osler, who is considered to be a “founding father” of modern medicine. There are currently 1,300 active members of AAP, plus approximately 600 emeritus and honorary members from the U.S., Canada and abroad. Approximately 60 new members are selected each year.

In addition to Dr. Andes, other active members of AAP at the University of Wisconsin-Madison include Richard Page, MD, George R. and Elaine Love Professor and chair, Department of Medicine; William Busse, MD, professor, Allergy, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine; Marc Drezner, MD, professor, Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism and executive director of the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research; Michael Fiore, MD, MPH, MBA, professor, General Internal Medicine and director of the University of Wisconsin Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention; James Gern, MD, professor, Allergy, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and Department of Pediatrics; Anna Huttenlocher, MD, professor, Department of Pediatrics; Shannon Kenney, MD, professor, Infectious Disease and Department of Oncology; Bruce Klein, MD, professor, Departments of Pediatrics and Medical Microbiology and Immunology; and Deane Mosher, MD, professor, Hematology/Oncology and Department of Biomolecular Chemistry.
