3rd annual General Internal Medicine scholars showcase

3rd Annual General Internal Medicine Scholars Showcase

A large classroom at UW Health West Clinic was standing room only on May 3, 2017 as members of the Division of General Internal Medicine gathered for the third annual GIM Scholars Showcase. To highlight scholarly work in areas such as clinical research, quality improvement, medical education, and systems improvement, division members listened to summaries of talks recently presented at annual conferences of organizations such as the Society for General Internal Medicine (SGIM) and presented posters in five-minute "round robin" format.

"Our division has really been a clinical division, and this annual showcase has made a big difference in members' interest in scholarly work. That interest has translated now into the early seeds of academic work such as posters, abstracts, and presentations at SGIM—that's a huge step for us," said Elizabeth Trowbridge, MD, clinical professor and head, General Internal Medicine. It's important that this curiosity be fostered and celebrated, she believes. "The goal two or three years down the line is that everyone in the primary care track has a project that they could present at SGIM," she said.

Several themes emerged among the presentations, including emphasis on medical education, systems of practice, team-based care, and tobacco cessation. An introduction was delivered by James Sosman, MD, professor (CHS), General Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease, followed by recaps of SGIM workshops entitled “What’s Grit Got To Do with It? Using Growth Mindset to Encourage Resident Perseverence” by Amy Zelenski, PhD, assistant professor (CHS) and “A brief intervention to reduce stress and increase resilience among Internal Medicine residents” by Lisa Grant, DO, clinical associate professor, Dr. Zelenski, and Mariah Quinn, MD, MPH, assistant professor (CHS).
