Get to know Dr. Alex Carter
Alex Carter, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor
Hospital Medicine
What is your primary professional focus as it relates to our mission areas (clinical, research and/or medical education)?
As a recent graduate of residency training, I plan to initially focus primarily on clinical practice. I plan to become more involved in medical education and quality improvement/research initiatives in the very near future!
What drew you to UW–Madison and the Department of Medicine?
I'm originally from the Twin Cities [Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota] and have always been a Midwesterner at heart. I hadn't been to Madison until my interview day, but I immediately fell in love with the city at that first visit. During the interview process, I was struck by the supportive culture of everyone in the DOM from clinicians to administrative staff.
The department clearly seeks and incorporates feedback and prioritizes wellness to ensure that providers are equipped to provide quality, evidence-based patient care.
What are you most excited about during your first year with the department in this role?
I look forward to working alongside and learning from so many experienced, enthusiastic practitioners as I continue to develop and refine my own practice style. I also look forward to exploring many of the non-clinical opportunities afforded by the department in fields like education, quality improvement, and other departmental initiatives.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
In my free time I enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, rock climbing, and tennis. When the weather is less hospitable, you can find me at an indie movie theatre, concert venue or reading historical fiction.
Favorite piece of advice from a mentor or inspiring figure in your life?
A hospitalist mentor encouraged me to never forget that what seems like a "normal" day at work for me is likely one of the scariest and stressful days in the life of my patients and their loved ones. I regularly reflect on this advice to always remain empathetic and maintain perspective, especially when I feel like I'm having a particularly stressful/challenging workday.
