Steve Barczi, MD, professor, Geriatrics and Gerontology, began as the chief of the Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology, effective November 1, 2025.

Dr. Barczi is well known to the division and department, having served as interim division chief over the past year and leading with steadiness and vision during a challenging time.

Dr. Barczi received his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago and completed his internal medicine residency at University of Minnesota Affiliated Hospitals in Minneapolis, followed by a geriatric medicine clinical fellowship and sleep medicine fellowship at UW Hospital and Clinics.

An accomplished clinician-educator and researcher, Dr. Barczi has been a member of the Department of Medicine for over 30 years and is the acting director of the Madison VA Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (VA GRECC).

He has conducted research in areas of sleep and aging and led national initiatives in geriatrics education and workforce development, mentoring countless early-career geriatricians.

I’m looking forward to working alongside our talented team to advance the science and care of older adults and make a meaningful impact, together.

More recently, he helped develop new telemedicine models for elderly patients and worked to extend geriatrics and memory care to Wisconsin’s tribal nations.

Through leadership roles with the American Geriatrics Society, the Alliance of Academic Internal Medicine, the Veterans Health Administration, and other professional societies, Dr. Barczi has worked to shape a national agenda for geriatric competencies and streamlined transitions across the medical education continuum.

“I feel fortunate to have been part of this system for over 30 years and to have seen our division grow into a truly supportive and cohesive community,” says Dr. Barczi.

“As we face the challenges and opportunities of an aging population here in Wisconsin and across the country, I’m looking forward to working alongside our talented team to advance the science and care of older adults and make a meaningful impact, together.”
