Get to know Dr. Ryan Townshend

What is your primary professional focus as it relates to our mission areas (clinical, research and/or medical education)?
My clinical focus is on delivering excellent, compassionate care to admitted patients as a hospitalist at University Hospital and East Madison Hospital. My academic focus centers on advancing point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) education for internal medicine residents.
What drew you to UW–Madison and the Department of Medicine?
During my residency training here, I experienced firsthand the collegiality and dedication of the Department of Medicine faculty and staff at UW–Madison. The opportunity to practice in diverse clinical environments across multiple hospitals, combined with the department’s strong commitment to resident education, inspired me to continue my career at this outstanding institution.
What are you most excited about during your first year with the department in this role?
I look forward to collaborating with my new colleagues and gaining a deeper understanding of the system to contribute to future quality improvement initiatives.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
I enjoy spending time with my family, biking, hiking, photography, and woodworking.
Favorite piece of advice from a mentor or inspiring figure in your life?
It takes a second to judge someone, it can take a lifetime to understand them.
