William Bull, MD

Clinical Assistant Professor
General Internal Medicine

What is your primary professional focus as it relates to our mission areas (clinical, research and/or medical education)?
My primary professional focus is the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based primary care within rural Wisconsin communities. I am particularly interested in addressing the complex healthcare needs of rural populations, including barriers to healthcare access, disparities in health outcomes, and the delivery of comprehensive and preventive care in resource-limited settings.

My prior research has focused on substance use in rural Wisconsin, examining the unique challenges associated with substance use and access to treatment in rural populations. Moving forward, I am interested in integrating my clinical and research interests to advance the understanding of rural health needs and contribute to the development and implementation of evidence-based strategies to improve health outcomes in rural communities.

What drew you to UW–Madison and the Department of Medicine?
My connection to UW–Madison and the Department of Medicine is both longstanding and deeply personal. Originally from rural Wisconsin, I have always valued the importance of providing high-quality healthcare to patients in rural communities. My journey in healthcare began at the University of Wisconsin in 2016, where I worked within the Departments of Radiology and Anesthesiology. This early experience provided me with the opportunity to learn from outstanding clinicians and educators while developing a strong appreciation for the academic mission of the institution.

I subsequently attended the University of Wisconsin for medical school and residency, experiences that played a formative role in my development as a physician. During my training, I developed strong and lasting relationships with patients, colleagues, faculty, and staff throughout the University of Wisconsin and the Department of Medicine. These relationships, along with the culture of collaboration, clinical excellence, and commitment to education, have continued to shape my professional goals.

The opportunity to contribute to the Department of Medicine is particularly meaningful because it would allow me to give back to the institution that played such an important role in my training and development. I am especially drawn to the opportunity to participate in medical education at the same institution where I trained, while continuing to provide high-quality care to patients in Wisconsin. I view this as an opportunity to build upon the mentorship, education, and relationships that have shaped my career and to contribute to the continued clinical, educational, and academic mission of UW–Madison and the Department of Medicine.

What are you most excited about during your first year with the department in this role?
I am most excited about the opportunity to continue growing my clinical practice within the Department of Medicine and to build meaningful, long-term relationships with my patients. I am also enthusiastic about becoming more involved in medical education, particularly through teaching and mentoring medical students. Having trained at UW–Madison, I look forward to bringing my experiences back to the institution while continuing to learn from the outstanding faculty and colleagues within the department.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
Outside of work, I most enjoy spending time with my wife, Maggie, our dog, Gus, and the rest of our family. I am an avid sports fan and particularly enjoy following basketball and football. I also enjoy traveling and exploring new places, experiencing different cultures, and making memories with family and friends.

Favorite piece of advice from a mentor or inspiring figure in your life?
One of the most meaningful pieces of advice I received from my father was to “work hard and have fun,” a message he often emphasized during my years in athletics. I have carried that philosophy with me throughout medical school, residency, and my career in medicine, striving to work diligently, remain committed to those I serve, and find enjoyment and fulfillment in the journey.
