Get to know Dr. Ryan Denu
Ryan Denu, MD
Assistant Professor
Hematology, Medical Oncology and Palliative Care
What is your primary professional focus as it relates to our mission areas (clinical, research and/or medical education)?
I am a physician scientist and medical oncologist focused on the research and treatment of sarcomas. My laboratory focuses on understanding epigenetic regulation of plasticity and heterogeneity in sarcoma.
What drew you to UW–Madison and the Department of Medicine?
Madison is home for me. I earned three degrees from the UW. It was time to come home.
What are you most excited about during your first year with the department in this role?
I am excited about starting my own research group, hiring people to my group who share the same excitement for science and innovation, and seeing my lab members develop and grow. I am also excited about helping to build a sarcoma program here at UW.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
Mostly tennis. Nowadays enjoy seeing my ~1-year-old son grow and learn new things.
Favorite piece of advice from a mentor or inspiring figure in your life?
My first lab mentor, Peiman Hematti, always told me to make sure that I focus my work on something that will improve the lives of patients.
