Get to know Dr. Laura Miotke
Laura Miotke, MD
Assistant Professor
Hematology, Medical Oncology and Palliative Care
What is your primary professional focus as it relates to our mission areas (clinical, research and/or medical education)?
My research focus is in clinical research to improve care in colorectal (and other gastrointestinal) cancer.
What drew you to UW–Madison and the Department of Medicine?
The strong mentorship in medical oncology at UW–Madison was what drew me here the most! My colleagues are doing exciting research to advance the field and are exceptionally generous with their time and expertise in mentoring early-career faculty.
What are you most excited about during your first year with the department in this role?
I am excited to get to know my patients and see some research projects move from concepts to active treatments.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
I enjoy reading, traveling with my family, riding my bike, cross-country skiing, making elaborate birthday cakes and directing amateur Christmas plays.
Favorite piece of advice from a mentor or inspiring figure in your life?
Much to my childhood dismay, my dad would always quote [the movie] A League of Their Own at me: "It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great."
Now, it's frightening how often I tell this to my own kids (and myself).
