Eric Mehlhaff, MD

Clinical Assistant Professor
Hematology, Medical Oncology and Palliative Care

What is your primary professional focus as it relates to our mission areas (clinical, research and/or medical education)?
My primary focus is providing compassionate, evidence-based care for patients, with a specific interest in gastrointestinal and thoracic malignancies. I am also passionate about medical education and contributing to clinical research that improves patient outcomes.

What drew you to UW–Madison and the Department of Medicine?
I was drawn to UW’s collaborative culture and commitment to clinical excellence. There is a palpable energy and passion among Department of Medicine faculty which inspires me to become a better physician.

What are you most excited about during your first year with the department in this role?
I look forward to fostering meaningful relationships with colleagues, collaborating across disciplines, and empowering patients to make informed decisions about their care.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
I enjoy spending time with family and friends, cooking & grilling, watching sports (go Vikings!) and spending time outdoors.

Favorite piece of advice from a mentor or inspiring figure in your life?
Sometimes, the most important thing we can do is simply be present. I believe that listening, acknowledging uncertainty, and supporting patients through difficult moments are just as important as the medical treatments we provide.
