Danielle Atibalentja, MD, PhD

Assistant Professor
Hematology, Medical Oncology and Palliative Care

What is your primary professional focus as it relates to our mission areas (clinical, research and/or medical education)?
I am a hematologist/oncologist, and I focus on the treatment of patients with lymphoid malignancies along with patients undergoing stem cell transplant and cellular therapy. Prior to medical school, I trained as an immunologist, and I am deeply interested in the way the immune system interacts with cancer cells. My research goal is to develop novel therapies that enhance immune activation and improve immune targeting of cancer cells.

What drew you to UW–Madison and the Department of Medicine?
The opportunity to do great translational research and the collaborative environment here at UW–Madison are just some of the reasons I chose to come here. I felt that this was a place where my contributions would be valued and I would be well supported as a junior faculty.

What are you most excited about during your first year with the department in this role?
I am excited to get to know my colleagues, learn about the great opportunities available at UW–Madison and develop my translational research program.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
Spending time with my family, trying out new restaurants, being outdoors, and taking road trips throughout Wisconsin has been super enjoyable. I am excited to continue to explore my new home state.

Favorite piece of advice from a mentor or inspiring figure in your life?
My parents are my greatest inspiration. Growing up they taught me to never limit myself when it comes to the pursuit of my dreams. They are the reasons I have been able to accomplish so much.
