Amy Bier, MD

Clinical Assistant Professor
Hematology, Medical Oncology and Palliative Care

What is your primary professional focus as it relates to our mission areas (clinical, research and/or medical education)?
My primary focus is clinical; I work with patients who are going through serious illness to support them and their loved ones. I focus on optimizing communication to ensure the best decisions are made for patients in their healthcare journey, while working to ensure their comfort.

What drew you to UW–Madison and the Department of Medicine?
I have always loved UW–Madison, and I was fortunate enough to complete my residency, chief residency, and fellowship through the Department of Medicine. I identify with the values of the DOM through emphasizing high quality care for patients and an excellent place for learners in the medical field.

What are you most excited about during your first year with the department in this role?
I am most excited to work directly with patients and their loved ones! Additionally, I have some academic projects I am forming to help broaden primary palliative care education.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
I love to be outside and enjoy all the seasons Wisconsin has to offer. I spend a lot of my time with my two dogs, and enjoy hiking and traveling when I'm free.

Favorite piece of advice from a mentor or inspiring figure in your life?
A piece of advice that continues to stick with me from a couple of my mentors is learning how to create healthy boundaries, which can apply to work, life, and relationships.
