Q&A with the 2025-26 chief residents

Tonela Qyli, MD
Vogelman/Carnes Family Endowed Chief Resident
Medical school: University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health
What does being a chief resident mean to you?
I’m so honored and excited to be a chief resident this year! To me, this role is a chance to give back to the program and community that has supported me since the beginning of medical school here at the University of Wisconsin.
It’s both a privilege and a responsibility, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to work and learn together with our residents.
What are you most looking forward to as chief?
I am especially looking forward to mentoring residents and supporting them through their journey in residency. It is so fun to witness the camaraderie between our residents and their compassionate care for not only their patients, but also for each other.
I’m also so happy to be working alongside my wonderful co-chiefs—Adam, Ahmed, Jeanette, and Jess. It’s a privilege to be doing our chief year together.

What’s your favorite part of the UW internal medicine residency?
My time at UW–Madison has been filled with meaningful experiences, but what stands out most are the amazing people I’ve worked with and supportive colleagues who have become lifelong friends.
I have especially enjoyed my time in pulmonary clinic and the opportunity to work with dedicated research mentors who have helped me explore and grow my academic interests. I’m so thankful for the continuous support from this program throughout my journey.
