Meet Dr. Ahmed El Shaer, chief resident

Q&A with the 2025-26 chief residents

Dr. El Shaer

Ahmed El Shaer, MBBS

Medical school: Alfaisal University College of Medicine, Saudi Arabia

What does being a chief resident mean to you?
Being a chief resident is an incredible honor and an opportunity to give back to the program that has shaped me. It is a responsibility to ensure that residents have the best possible training experience academically, clinically, and personally.

It means advocating for them, listening to their concerns, and helping them grow into the physicians they aspire to be. It is also an opportunity to collaborate with residents, co-chiefs, and faculty to continuously tailor and improve our curriculum to meet the needs of our residents.

Personally, it is a chance for me to further develop my leadership, communication, and teaching skills while discovering the type of physician I want to become.

What are you most looking forward to as chief?
I am looking forward to working closely with my co-chiefs and faculty to mentor and guide residents. I am excited to evaluate and develop curriculum to meet our residents’ needs, and to be a resource they feel comfortable reaching out to so we can support them to the best of our abilities.

I really value that our program is never static and is committed to continually evolving and improving to help us become the best physicians we can be.

Dr. El Shaer

What’s your favorite part of the UW internal medicine residency?
My favorite part of our residency program is the culture of kindness and growth. Our attendings are not only excellent clinicians and teachers but also genuinely kind mentors. The co-residents truly care about one another and are always there to support each other, which creates a strong sense of community.

I also really value that our program is never static and is committed to continually evolving and improving to help us become the best physicians we can be.
