Eight Med Ed Innovation Grants awarded to DOM faculty and trainees for 2026-27
The Department of Medicine (DOM) Education Committee recently awarded eight Medical Education Innovation Grants to department faculty and trainees for 2026-2027.
The Medical Education Innovation Grants provide up to $20,000 over two years to DOM faculty members or learners working on projects that support the department’s educational goals and priorities, with priority given to projects that “attempt to develop and implement novel solutions, technologies, or approaches not currently utilized within medical education.”
This year’s projects and recipients are:
- "Internal Medicine Residency POCUS Competency Evaluation Project" – Michael Houghan, MD, assistant professor, General Internal Medicine
- "Closing the Gap in Menopausal and Hormone Therapy Care: A Needs-Driven, Evidence-Based Curriculum for Internal Medicine Residents" – Julia Knight-Shefner, MD, PG-2, and Katharine Tippins, MD, PG-2, both UW Internal Medicine Residency
- "Establishing Standards for Lung Transplant Fellowship Training in the United States" – Kavya Kommaraju, MD, clinical assistant professor, Allergy, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine
- "Improving Interdisciplinary Communication During Consultation Using an Intergroup Communication Framework to Improve Patient Care and Trainee Wellbeing" – Michael Pennella, MD, fellow, Infectious Disease
- "Innovating Medical Education to Prepare Clinicians for Care of Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Patients" – Karen Reece, PhD, clinical assistant adjunct professor, and Robert Striker, MD, PhD, associate professor, Infectious Disease
- "Developing a Research Path of Distinction: A Structured Curriculum to Promote Scholarly Engagement in the Internal Medicine Residency" – Katharine Tippins, MD, PG-2, UW Internal Medicine Residency
- "Exploring the Perception and Experience of First-Feneration Trainees During GME Transitions" – Jessica Tischendorf, MD, MS, assistant professor, Infectious Disease
- "IBD Bootcamp for the General GI Fellow" – Gabrielle Waclawik, MD, MPH, fellow, Gastroenterology and Hepatology
