What's next for Chief Resident Dr. Kelsey Holbert?
Kelsey Holbert, MD
Vogelman/Carnes Family Endowed Chief Resident
What’s next for you, personally and professionally? Why did you decide on that route?
I am heading to the University of Illinois–Chicago for a Pulmonary/Critical Care T32 Advanced Research Fellowship next year! I have really enjoyed my time in the lab and doing research in residency and I am really excited about the opportunity to continue doing basic science research in fellowship. I really like the variety that PCCM offers and hope to be able to continue both research and clinical time in my future career. I am looking forward to going back to Chicago and being closer to some of my family, but we are also so sad to leave Madison!
What are the main takeaways from your time as chief resident (i.e., what did you learn, what was memorable, etc.)?
I have been honored to work and teach alongside some incredible residents, co-chiefs, program administration, and program and department leadership this year. I have learned so much about medicine, teaching, and teamwork by getting to work with so many wonderful people and am so grateful to have been part of this team.
What advice/words of encouragement do you have for 1) the incoming chiefs, 2) the incoming interns (PG-1s), and 3) residents who are considering applying for chief residencies next year?
- Incoming chiefs: You will be amazing chiefs and we are so lucky to get to keep you for one more year. Remember to think about your long-term goals for the year in addition to all the short-term tasks.
- Incoming interns: At times you might feel overwhelmed or like there is so much you don't know. I certainly did! Remember what you can bring to your work beyond medical knowledge every day (hard work, communication skills, organization, attention to detail, compassion, attitude, professionalism, etc.!) We are so happy to have you here! And frequent the terrace in the summer. 😊
- Residents: Please feel free to reach out to me or any of the chiefs any time if you want to discuss applying for chief year.
Is there anything else you’d like to share, whether they’re shout-outs or memories?
Shout out to my wonderful co-chief residents—Amy, Caroline and Mike—from whom and with whom I have learned and grown so much this year. We have all been through a lot together this year and it has been so wonderful to be there for each other personally and professionally. I have become a better leader and teammate from getting to work with them this year and all they have taught me will stick with me throughout my career. I can't wait to see the great things [my co-chiefs will] do and I will miss them greatly. A big thank you to Andy for being such a wonderful leader of our residency program. His dedication to our residents, our education and our program is truly admirable, and I feel very lucky to have gotten to work with him this year!
