What's next for Chief Resident Dr. Tonela Qyli?
Tonela Qyli, MD
What’s next for you, personally and professionally? Why did you decide on that route?
I am so excited to be heading to UC San Diego to pursue a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine (PCCM)! I was drawn to PCCM because of the diversity of clinical experiences it offers, as well as the opportunity to continue the research I began during my chief year.
While I am very much looking forward to this next chapter in San Diego, I will truly miss Madison and the incredible friends and mentors here.
What are the main takeaways from your time as chief resident (i.e., what did you learn, what was memorable, etc.)?
This has been an incredibly rewarding year. I have learned so much from working alongside outstanding co-chiefs, program leadership, and administrators.
Most notably, this year has taught me much about mentorship, teaching, and building connections. It has been a memorable and formative experience.
What advice/words of encouragement do you have for 1) the incoming chiefs, 2) the incoming interns (PG-1s), and 3) residents who are considering applying for chief residencies next year?
- Incoming chiefs: Daniel, Emily, Grace, Juanita, and Michael—I am so excited for you as you begin your chief year. The program is incredibly fortunate to keep you for one more year. My advice would be to stay grounded in your personal and professional goals, even as many competing responsibilities arise throughout the year.
- Incoming interns: Welcome to UW IM! It has been fun getting to know many of you already. Intern year can feel intimidating, but it is also an incredibly fun and meaningful time. Remember to get out on the lake at least once this summer :)
- Prospective chiefs: If you are even thinking about applying for a chief year, you should do it! This has been my favorite year of residency and a unique opportunity to step back, grow, and reflect on long-term goals. Please reach out if you have questions or want to chat more about the experience.
Is there anything else you’d like to share, whether it’s shout-outs or memories?
There are so many people I would like to thank, especially the residents who made this year so enjoyable.
I am incredibly grateful to my co-chiefs—Adam, Ahmed, Jeanette, and Jess—for their friendship and partnership.
A special thank you as well to Andy for his mentorship and inspiring leadership.
And finally, thank you to my partner, Jayce, for his unconditional support.
