What's next for Chief Resident Dr. Jeanette Liou?
Jeanette Liou, MD
What’s next for you, personally and professionally? Why did you decide on that route?
After completing my chief year, I’m excited to share that I will be staying at UW as a hospitalist! During my time as a resident and chief resident here, I’ve had the privilege of working and learning from outstanding faculty. Starting the next phase of my career at UW felt like a natural next step for me to continue to grow as a clinician and educator.
What are the main takeaways from your time as chief resident (i.e., what did you learn, what was memorable, etc.)?
One of my primary goals during chief year was to become a better educator and I’m grateful for the opportunity to grow my teaching skills through leading morning report and other learning sessions. I’ve also gained valuable insight into how residency programs are structured and run which has further solidified my interest in a career in academic medicine.
What advice/words of encouragement do you have for 1) the incoming chiefs, 2) the incoming interns (PG-1s), and 3) residents who are considering applying for chief residencies next year?
- Incoming chiefs: The year goes by quickly so be intentional about setting and achieving your personal and professional goals. It’s easy to get caught up in the day to day responsibilities, but carving out time for what matters to you is also important. Also, develop a system to manage your email early on as it will save you a lot of time and stress!
- Incoming interns: Intern year can feel overwhelming but you are learning more than you realize every single day. Be patient with yourself and don’t hesitate to ask for help. No one expects you to know everything. Remember that every great physician was once in your shoes, and we are all here to support you!
- Prospective chiefs: Chief year is an incredibly rewarding opportunity to develop leadership and teaching skills. If you have any interest in medical education, mentorship, or leadership, I strongly encourage you to apply. The experience is both challenging and fulfilling, and the skills you gain are valuable no matter what career path you pursue!
Is there anything else you’d like to share, whether it’s shout-outs or memories?
I want to sincerely thank the incredible faculty and administrative staff for their dedication to the residency program and for all their support.
I’m especially grateful to my co-chiefs for their encouragement and friendship this year. I couldn’t have imagined a better group of people to spend the year with.
Lastly, to the residents, thank you for allowing me to be part of your residency journey. You are the reason we love what we do, and we are excited to see you continue to achieve your goals in residency and beyond!
