Professional Activities

Dr. James Sosman is a faculty member in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Division of Infectious Disease. He serves as Medical Director for the UW Health HIV Care & Prevention Program, as well as Medical Director for the Midwest AIDS Training and Education Center - Wisconsin Site (MATEC). As a nationally recognized leader in the field of HIV/AIDS medicine, Dr. Sosman serves on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of HIV Medicine (AAHIVM) and the HIV Medical Association (HIVMA) of the Infectious Disease Society of America, respectively. He has received numerous honors including a Leadership Award from the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin (on behalf of UW Health HIV/AIDS Comprehensive Care Center), the General Internal Medicine Faculty Excellence Award for Research, the Partners in Public Health Improvement Award from the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP), and being named several times to the “Best Doctors in America” list. Dr. Sosman has mentored dozens of students, trainees, and early-career researchers, and frequently lectures in the medical school curricula. He works one-on-one with fellows in the Infectious Disease training program to provide the clinical training in HIV/AIDS care.

Clinical Specialties

Dr. Sosman is a practicing HIV specialist at the UW Health Infectious Disease Clinic, and practices internal medicine at the UW Health University Station Clinic. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics.

Research Interests

Research led by Dr. Sosman focuses on HIV/AIDS and topics in internal medicine including smoking cessation. Dr. Sosman is the Principal Investigator and Medical Director for the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program Grants, a federal program providing early intervention and ongoing primary care services to HIV-infected individuals.
