Professional Activities

Dr. Kyle Schmidt is a faculty member in the Division of Hospital Medicine within the Department of Medicine. He has served as the Medical Director of Hospitalist Oncology since late 2024, which is when the current model of two hospitalist-led inpatient teams began. In that role, he works closely with his physician counterpart in Oncology, as well as the inpatient Oncology APPs, and additionally serves as a Dyad leader addressing safety issues, nursing concerns, and other aspects of inpatient care for patients admitted with oncologic problems. He also works on general hospital medicine services, works with residents, medical students, IMGs, and is one of the proceduralists in Hospital Medicine performing lumbar punctures, thoracenteses and paracenteses.

Clinical Specialties

Dr. Schmidt's main area of clinical focus is inpatient oncology care including management of oncologic complications like neutropenic fever, malignant biliary or intestinal obstruction, and toxicities related to immune checkpoint inhibitors or bispecific T-cell engagers.

Research Interests

Dr. Schmidt’s academic interests heavily focus on immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) toxicity. He has worked closely with several members of the Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Palliative Care to develop an inpatient order set for early management of ICI toxicities and to recruit a broad group of subspecialty members to review and discuss challenging inpatient cases like myocarditis, myositis, myasthenia overlap syndrome (TMOS), cholangiohepatitis, aplastic anemia, and management in steroid-refractory cases. He has additional interest in the use of Bispecific T-cell Engagers (BiTE) for solid tumors and their adverse reactions, such as Cytokine Release Syndrome (CRS), and the general intersection of cellular biology and medicine.
