Professional Activities

Dr. Sujani Kakumanu is a faculty member and clinical educator in the Division of Allergy, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. Her educational experience includes serving as the former director of the UW-Madison Allergy and Immunology Fellowship Program, lectures to UW-Madison Internal Medicine residents and Allergy/Immunology fellows, lectures on school-based asthma management to the Wisconsin Association of School Nurses and the American Lung Association, adjunct instructor in biomedical informatics at Bellevue Community College and the Veterans Administration, and teaching continuing medical education courses on topics in allergy and immunology. Dr. Kakumanu is also a consultant and author of Up to Date, an online medical journal, and past author for the New England Journal of Medicine Knowledge+ online lifeline learning product. She has served as Technology Editor for the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. She holds several AAAAI committee roles, including chair of the Health Information Technology Committee and a group leader for the Office of School Based Asthma Management. In the past, Dr. Kakumanu has served as a volunteer physician in Cambodia and Kenya, and has also served in Teach for America Service Corps. She is a fellow of AAAAI and the associate director for ambulatory specialty clinics at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital.

Clinical Specialties

Dr. Kakumanu's medical interests include asthma, rhinosinusitis, mastocytosis, eosinophilic disorders, drug hypersensitivity, immunodeficiency, angioedema, and urticaria.

Research Interests

Dr. Kakumanu is a Clinical Professor within the Division of Allergy, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and the Section of Applied informatics in the Department of Medicine. She has a unique combination of expertise that encompasses clinical research in asthma, dissemination and implementation science, and health informatics. Dr. Kakumanu’s research has been funded through the Office of the National Coordinator and the VA HSR&D and has focused on best practices to translate evidence-based guidance into practice for asthma, COPD, and penicillin allergy. In addition, Dr. Kakumanu is an active clinician and sees patients with allergy and primary immunodeficiency at the UW Hospital and Clinics and William S. Middleton Veterans Hospital.. Nationally, Dr. Kakumanu works with the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology as Chair of the Health, Education, Technology and Quality Interest Section (HETQ), past chair of the Health, Information, Technology and Education committee (HITE) and as vice chair of the Office of School-based Management. Dr. Kakumanu has authored numerous publications in the areas of allergy/immunology and health informatics and is actively involved the teaching of medical residents and fellows.
