As a graduate medical education administrator within the Department of Medicine, Jacki Johnson, M.Ed., provides strategic leadership in support of residency program operations, administrative infrastructure, and professional development initiatives. She partners closely with program, departmental and institutional leaders to strengthen systems that support the department’s clinical and educational missions.
Her leadership is grounded in a collaborative, systems-focused approach, with a focus on policy standardization, onboarding and development of program managers, and strengthening the program director–program manager partnership through role clarity and effective communication. She has led initiatives to align departmental policies with institutional requirements, improve onboarding structures, and elevate the role of Graduate Medical Education (GME) staff professionals as strategic contributors within academic medicine.
In recognition of her contributions to graduate medical education, Jacki received the National Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine (APDIM) Program Administrator Excellence Award from the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM), honoring her leadership, innovation, and commitment to advancing the field of internal medicine education. She has also received the institutional Program Coordinator Excellence Award in recognition of her leadership in GME at UW.
Beyond her administrative responsibilities, she is committed to mentoring emerging GME professionals and contributing to conversations on leadership, workforce sustainability and inclusive practices in academic medicine.
Jacki’s scholarly interests focus on graduate medical education administration, organizational culture and professional identity within the context of academic medicine. Her work explores strategies to strengthen onboarding practices, reduce program manager turnover and enhance understanding of the scope and complexity of the GME administrator role.
She is particularly interested in leadership development for non-clinical professionals, systems-based approaches to policy and compliance, and the impact of organizational culture on retention and performance. Her long-term goal is to contribute scholarship that strengthens the infrastructure supporting residency programs, resident identity development, and advances recognition of GME staff professionals as essential leaders within academic medicine.
