Professional Activities

Dr. Freddy Caldera is the Yehle Family Professor in IBD Research and a faculty member in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology within the Department of Medicine (DOM). He also serves as the division's Vice Chair of Clinical Research. 

A gastroenterologist and clinical researcher specializing in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) care and prevention, Dr. Caldera is a recipient of the 2016 American Gastroenterological Association Certificate of Recognition Early Stage Investigator Award. 

In recognition of his mentorship, he has received the department's 2021 Rising Star Excellence in Research, its 2023 Research Mentorship Award, and the 2024 Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Mentor Award. His clinical excellence has been recognized through the 2016 Outstanding Clinical Educator Award and the 2018 Clinical Instructor of the Year Award from the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He has been named to the DOM's Star Clinician Honor Roll in both 2023 and 2024. 

He has been elected as a Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association and a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology, and is a member of many professional organizations including the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America, the American Gastroenterological Association and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Dr. Caldera is a physician-scientist with a research program that spans vaccine safety and immunogenicity in immunocompromised populations, pharmacoepidemiology, and preventive care strategies for patients with IBD. 

He is the founder and director of the Caldera Lab, whose mission is to evaluate the safety of medications used to treat inflammatory bowel disease. He is a co-author of the American College of Gastroenterology preventive care guidelines and is widely recognized for his contributions to improving the safety and quality of IBD care.
