About the program

All assistant professors hired on the CT track have a mentor who supports them in several areas, including professional development, job satisfaction and promotion.

Mentors are promoted DOM faculty (clinical associate or full professors) who aren't in a leadership role (like department chair, division chief, center director). In some cases, CHS track faculty with a strong clinical focus may also serve as mentors. All mentors complete the department's mentor training program, offered each fall.

Matching Process

  1. Mentors and mentees each complete a brief form to identify their preferences.
  2. DOM faculty development program staff uses this information to match mentors and mentees.
  3. The DOM vice chair for faculty development approves each pairing.
  4. After one year, the mentee or current mentor can request a different or additional mentor.

Expectations

Mentors and mentees are expected to complete certain action items and meet milestones to ensure a successful mentoring relationship.

Evaluations

Mentees complete an annual anonymous questionnaire to evaluate the quality and content of the clinical mentoring process. This feedback is confidential and used to improve mentoring education and processes.

Meetings

Mentoring pairs should have their first meeting within the first six months of the assistant professor's arrival. Meetings should continue to take place at least twice per year, or more frequently if desired, for five years until promotion.
