Internal Funding Opportunities

Academic Discretionary Funds

Beginning July 1, 2021, UW Health will provide additional funds to academic departments in support of the academic mission of the department.  Department of Medicine has determined the primary purpose of these funds is to support career development of Faculty and APPs and faculty mentored projects.  Requests by a single individual cannot exceed $5,000 in a fiscal year (July 1 – June 30). For Publications, if you have grant funding that would cover your requested expense, please use those funds.  For all other requests, if you have other discretionary funding (startup, bridge, pilot) or grant funding that would cover your requested expense those funds must be used first.  Examples of what these funds can be used for are:

  • Publication fees when you are the first or senior author: Publications fees should be paid for by use of a UW purchasing card or a direct payment.  Do not use personal funds to pay for these items.
  • Presenting at meetings: Travel reimbursement may be provided for faculty serving as a first/senior author or an oral or poster presentation at a scientific meeting, or when the faculty is giving an invited talk or is serving in an official role within the organization.
  • Professional development:  attending an educational training/seminar.  The certification pre-approval request form is required and should be included with your request to use these funds.

To obtain approval to use these funds, please complete and submit the  Academic Discretionary Funds Form.
