Clinical and Research Interests

I perform basic and clinical research that focus on immunologically mediated lung diseases. Disorders of interest include interstitial lung disease (idiopathic interstitial pneumonias including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, sarcoidosis, and disorders associated with systemic autoimmune disorders (connective tissue disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus). Another area of interest is inflammatory airway diseases including bronchiectasis associated with cystic fibrosis, bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome in lung transplantation, idiopathic bronchiectasis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. I also perform basic and clinical research on lung transplantation and am a member of the UW Lung Transplant and Advanced Pulmonary Disease team. Additional areas of research and expertise include the effects of aging on lung structure and function, ageing-associated immunologic impairment and susceptibility to lung inflammation and infection, community and hospital-acquired lower respiratory tract infections and asthma. Current research in my laboratory focuses on (1) the roles of annexin I and phospholipase A2 in lung inflammation, (2) bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome and mechanisms of immune tolerance in lung transplantation, (3) lung remodeling in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), and (4) the role of neutrophils and neutrophil-derived proteases in lung disease. I am also a principal investigator for multiple multi-center clinical trials for the treatment of IPF, cystic fibrosis, non-CF bronchiectasis, and management of lung transplant recipients. Lastly, I am conducting research on animal models of lung disease (lung transplant, lung inflammation/fibrosis, stem cells) as well as various investigator-initiated clinical projects in lung transplantation, IPF, CF, and non-IPF interstitial lung disease.
