Faculty Oversight

To ensure an optimal research learning environment, the program established for the individual trainee is evaluated by the IMPACT Program leadership. Essential elements include placement of the trainee in a cutting-edge laboratory with a mentor who has a track record of successfully training academicians. The mentor is required to have daily interactions with the trainee, a sustained record of competitive research funding and an active program with other trainees or post-doctoral trainees in his or her laboratory. The mentor establishes clear training goals and supervises, assesses, gives feedback and documents the trainee's performance and progress throughout the research period. In addition to ensuring strong mentorship, the Faculty Advisory Committee is responsible for oversight of the training environment to make sure there is adequate funding for research, a critical mass of productive investigators and a broad curriculum, including research methods, research seminars and literature review conferences, training in grants and manuscript writing and opportunities for presentation and communication of research.
