Dr. Peiman Hematti completed a combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and a Clinical Hematology fellowship at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health. While at NIH he spent 4 years in the laboratory of Dr. Cynthia Dunbar studying the cellular biology of hematopoietic stem cells using gene transduction methodology. Dr. Hematti joined the Division of Hematology, Medical Oncology and Palliative Care at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2004. He is currently a professor (tenured) of Medicine, with joint appointments in Pediatrics, Surgery and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Hematti's clinical practice provides care for bone marrow transplant patients. He is also director of the Clinical Hematopoietic Cell Processing Laboratory, and medical director of the Apheresis and Bone Marrow Collection facility at University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. In those capacities he oversees all peripheral blood and bone marrow stem cell collections for hematopoietic cell transplantation or other cellular therapy applications.

Dr. Hematti's laboratory research focuses on investigating the immunomodulatory properties of mesenchymal stromal/stem cells, specifically their effects on macrophages. Currently, he has many multi-discipline, cross-college collaborations on campus studying the potential of these and other stem cells in many different pre-clinical models. Dr. Hematti is co-principal investigator on NHLBI "Production Assistance for Cellular Therapies" (PACT) award to UW-Madison. Dr. Hematti's clinical research interest is in the use of mesenchymal stem cells for treatment of graft versus host disease and other immune dysregulation disorders, novel cellular therapies for hematological malignancies, and use of bone marrow stem cells in regenerative medicine.
