Examining and reducing internal bias in the medical workforce
Molly Carnes, MD, MS, and her research program focuses on how cultural stereotypes perpetuate inequities. Her work has largely focused on increasing the diversity of the scientific, engineering, and medical workforce, particularly at the leadership level.
Currently, Dr. Carnes is leading an NIH-funded cluster randomized study involving 19 departments of medicine and testing the effectiveness of a workshop aimed at helping faculty “break the bias habit” in improving department climate and promoting bias-reducing actions. The BRIM Initiative focuses exclusively on bias reduction in Internal Medicine.
