Dr. Shirley’s current activities are primarily focused on Infection Control and Epidemiology, specifically related to prevention of Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI), preparation for emerging pathogens such as Ebola Virus Disease, and understanding the interactions between infection and modifiable health risk factors such as nutrition and smoking. His current research involves understanding factors influencing urine culture ordering and CAUTI rates, interactions between nutrition and hospital-acquired infections (HAI) such as C diff colitis, and establishing education/training programs in emerging pathogen preparedness and HAI prevention.
