Dr Astor's primary area of research is chronic kidney disease and its interaction with cardiovascular disease.He has a special interest in biomarkers of kidney function and the associations of these biomarkers with clinical outcomes, including incident chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular disease and mortality. He has pursued research in these areas in the general population (e.g., Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities [ARIC] Study, Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis [MESA]) as well as in clinical trials (African American Study of Kidney Disease and Hypertension [AASK]) and observational studies of dialysis patients (Choices for Healthy Outcomes in Caring for ESRD [CHOICE]).
